Slimline Pen – Texas Black Walnut – Chrome Hardware

This beautifully finished Texas Black Walnut pen is turned using a lathe and then finishing with cyanoacrylate (better known as “Super Glue”). This creates a durable finish that outlasts most other finishes. As with any wooden item that gets handled, the pen will develop a nice patina after considerable use. The wood in the pens will darken over time as they are exposed to the air and ultraviolet light from the sun.

All the pens come in a packageable and presentable linen case with a window for viewing.

WOOD SPECIFICS:
This item is made from solid Texas Black Walnut. No plywood, veneers, or substitute woods are used unless specifically listed. Unless otherwise requested, these items use mostly the heartwood (dark) wood. Greater mixes of sap-wood (blonde) can be requested upon order. The natural dark wood and lighter sap-wood are typical of walnut and add those little touches that veneers or staining can’t duplicate. This is a one-of-a-kind product as no two finished items will be exactly alike due to natural deviations in the wood used. Texas Black Walnut will tend to darken slightly over time as it’s exposed to air and UV sunlight.

MATERIALS:
This item is made from solid walnut, CA glue (aka Super Glue), and finished with a light coat of paste wax. All items are non-toxic once dried and all items will be completely dry at the time of shipping.

CONSTRUCTION:
The walnut is from non-dimensional rough lumber milled down to 3/4 inch thickness in my shop. All my wood is stored until the moisture count is less than 10% so that warping and/or cracking won’t occur over time (not for outdoor use). The pen wood is then turned on a lathe and shaped to the desired appearance. This is followed by sanding and finishing with CA glue. The pen tubes are installed inside the blanks using epoxy suitable for wood to brass bonding. The pen is then “pressed” and the re-fillable insert is added.

FINISH:
The finish procedure is 5-10 layers of CA glue (Cyanoacrylate or “Super Glue”). This ensures that the handling of the pen or pencil has the longest possible durability. Ultimately the pen or pencil will get a natural patina on it after use. All my finishes are non-toxic and FDA approved as food safe once dry.

DESIGN:
This design is call the Slimline series of pens and pencils. This is a common type of pen that has a more slender base and top and is typically more comfortable. The pen is a “twist” pen in that you twist the top to protrude and retract the ball point tip.
